I really dug listening to DC talk about her editing preferences, musical leanings, and stylistic choices. It's great hearing how she started and where she came from too.

DC, what are your most common or your most wanted sound matches when vidding? You mentioned visuals and punches on snares. Do you have other thoughts on musical visuals?

Also, I'm so in when the enlisting post comes up.

I really hope you do sign up. That would be a big help in a lot of ways.

Glad you liked the profile! *awaits DC's answers.... notepad in hand*

I shall. :)

I'm refraining from crying out, "teach me your ways, DC."

Glass breaking over cymbal crashes are always fun. There's an example of that in the Break Teen Spirit clip. Generally-speaking, I look for a close match in intensity. So subtle motion wouldn't go over a prominent musical element (like a loud guitar riff or a scream). Likewise I try to avoid matching strong movement, like an explosion or crash, over subdued musical cues. IMO, most people won't recognize that X was timed to Y if you have a clash in dynamics like that.

Duration is also a factor. If musical cue is short then the paired visual needs to feature sharp movement. If the cue fades out then I can go for a more extended motion that also fades in intensity. Really, I keep all of this and more in mind and am kind of terrible at explaining it. That's why I vid. So I can show rather than tell. :P

Oh, DC!!! TOO. AWESOME! There was so much in this that made me think 'ahhh, no WONDER I heart her vids so much!' ;) It was cool to hear the strengths I've always responded to discussed by her from the 'other side', so to speak.

Very cool insights into the action editing and musicality. *scribbles down wisdom*

I also love the insight about the verses versus the chorus... I've definitely felt that at work as a viewer (and great choice of 45 to illustrate that *g*). Choruses give me grief personally as a vidder and I sometimes struggle with people's treatment of them as a viewer too... it's like mentally I don't always know what to do with them, on either side of the fence, so I liked the articulated approach.

Also... play to your strengths!! Yes, totally! I am completely biased here because clearly I want you to keep vidding awesome action, DC! :p I see nothing wrong with that at all. (How could that be wrong?!) I love it when you do character/narrative work too though because it's always smart and powerful, since you use your musicality and editing prowess to support it. So in short I just want more vids. Period. :p (Ok, I'm going to shut up now in case I sound like one of those annoying fangirls who is all 'MAKE MOAR VIDS NOW!')

Glad you enjoyed it, Bop! I'm hoping to hear what DC has to say about your points here. But, yeah, I totally agree that no vidder should feel any pressure to move totally away from a genre that they do well.

haha, I thought my approach to choruses was so transparent that it's practically cliche by this point. Brad calls them "whooshy."

I love it when you do character/narrative work too though because it's always smart and powerful, since you use your musicality and editing prowess to support it.

:) That's the idea. I think it can be hard to recognize that when it's "dressed up" with the type of visuals I gravitate towards. So the compliment is very much appreciated.

Well, they *are* whooshy... but never underestimate my capacity to read or try to read more into anything. ;p And I wish I had your courage with visuals... I think my vids would be more exciting if I did. These profiles are a great opportunity to reflect on the way other vidders approach things and realise there's always a different option. Thank you for sharing so much about your work!

Seeing DC's work condensed in 6min makes your appreciate her talent even more :)

I was really interested in hearing DC talking about her editing preferences and choices. Though I have to rewatch cause DC talks really fast ;)

Wow! A masterpiece about a masterpiece basically!
First of all, brad you are an editing genius, these video commentaries are amazing, and second, DC you are too cool for words. I think at this point I've told you 12398529485 times how much I adore your work, but let me tell you again: I adore your work!

Heh. It doesn't take much on my part - DC's vids are so amazingly entertaining and kinetic. The only hard thing was picking out which awesome bit to use.

I love these so much! So well put together (seems so professional) and there's real insight into the vidder's work.

I'm a huge fan of the vids "Intergalactic Friends" and "Damaged", and have watched them both several times, but I wasn't familiar with the vidder's work as a whole. I really loved the commentary you included on bananainpyjamas's, and the vid clips you selected to demonstate her work. I got a real feel for her style.

I'm very eager for the next one!

Thanks so much for the compliment about the presentation! All of these vidders definitely deserve the best I can do.

DC's vids are unfailingly impressive. I don't think I've ever seen one from her that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. The only variable is whether or not I know the souce, and that doesn't usually affect my enjoyment much.

I still remember the adrenaline rush I felt the first time I saw Break Teen Spirit. That's a feeling that is so distinctly DC, and I'm kind of addicted to it. I was hoping to show why with this profile.

Glad you enjoyed it!

I know. Creatively, it's almost crippling... you never want to vid again, you know? But at the same time you just can't tear your eyes away. I'm hoping I can at least learn a thing or two from her by doing the profile.

Belatedly catching up: Brad, seriously, this is a brilliant brilliant series. DC's commentary is wonderful, articulate, and incisive about her practice, and you do a wonderful job of showing what she tells. I think these are amazing works of art & criticism. I <3 them SO MUCH. I want to shout from the rooftops how much I <3 them!

Thank you so much - both for the listings and for your lovely comments about the series. I find all of these vidders truly inspiring in very very different ways, and I'm just trying to show exactly why. I'm hopful that eventually they'll help give everyone a better sense of the varied and beautiful tapestry of vidding on LJ and elsewhere. There's still a lot of work to do to get there, but I'm certainly enjoying the trip and learning a lot along the way.

Thanks, Andrea! This was the "test" profile I did last summer to see if the whole idea would work, and then I used this one to show people what I wanted to do when I asked to interview them. DC's work - the energy and kinetic feel of it all - was one of the big inspirations for the whole profile project.
